Emily saw Madison’s car pull up and felt the sickness rise in her throat. It wasn’t enough that Madison had cost her everything, now she was stopping by to gloat? Tears filled her eyes but she forced them away. She was getting good at that.

“Go away, Madison,” she yelled, when Madison knocked on the door.

“Emily, I didn’t know,” Madison called back.

She was standing on the porch and Emily could see from the window what she’d failed to see when Madison had first come back into town, a cold-hearted bitch created by life in the big city.

Madison’s black hair blew gently in the cool autumn air, wisps of it falling in front of her designer sunglasses. She wore a soft black leather jacket. A brown scarf hung loosely around her neck. The Mercedes behind her and the designer bag slung across her arm made the vision all too real.

“Fuck off, Madison Avenue!” Emily yelled.

Madison took a step back. “I didn’t have anything to do with it,” she said, trying to ignore Emily’s insult.

“Are you happy now? You have your revenge!”

Emily, please—“

“Get off my porch, Madison,” Emily said recalling the day Madison had made a similar threat. “Or I’ll call the cops.”

There was nothing Madison could do but leave.
